Celebrating 50 years

Ian and Gwen McKinnon have spent 50 years together as husband and wife. As their milestone anniversary is fast approaching, the couple reflect on their life together.

Ian and Gwen married on April 6, 1968, surrounded by friends and family. Their strong, loving nature has stood the test of time, despite some struggles early on when they were first having their home built. Now, their relationship is stronger than ever.

“We don’t argue,” said Gwen. “But if we do, we just get on with it.”

It is clear that the couple have a strong, inseparable bond. After a long and impressive career with Victorian Railways, Ian decided to follow in his passion for driving and took on a job as a courier, with Gwen assisting with the books. Throughout the years, Ian and Gwen have spent most of their time together.

“Ian is always there for me,” Gwen said. “I know I can rely on him.”

Ian and Gwen have lived a fun, family-filled life. The pair would take their children on trips around the country during the school holidays in the family campervan. Travelling all around Victoria, the family have even travelled up to Sydney and down to Hobart. The couple have many of the same interests, including their support of Collingwood Football Club.

“We have always done things together and we have always been there for each other,” said Ian.

When people ask about the success of their marriage, Ian and Gwen are unsure how to respond. Their loving relationship seems to come easy to them both and there is clear admiration for one another.

“Someone asked me recently what our advice would be to other couples,” said Gwen. “We don’t really have any advice, we just support and love each other.”

This tight-knit pair are a source of inspiration for couples looking for a long and happy marriage. Daughter Leanne Rider is amazed at the longevity of her parents’ marriage as they serve as inspiration for her own marriage.

“I think that for my parents to achieve this milestone is amazing,” Leanne said. “I have so many friends who have single parents, or their parents have passed on. I feel so lucky.”
